I was raised with horses when I was younger, but have been away from them for a long time. Thank you for sharing your work with us. Pam

Dear Carol,
Thank you for your post. Unfortunately the Speedlights really don't have enough juice to bounce off the ceiling and get good enough light below. However, don't let me stop you from trying and seeing how effective it is. What I would suggest is if the rider refuses to allow a flash, either put your camera on a tripod without flash and set the iso high, probably about 1200 - 1600 and then shoot. You will get grain, especially if your camera is not one of the newer models, but you will avoid the use of flash. My other suggestion would be to see if they will let you shoot them outside. If you want to practice using flash, see if someone else will let you use the flash while riding so you can practice.

I'm trying to learn how to shoot a champion dressage horse in training. I have a mounted Canon Speedlite 430 ex The rider is adamant about not using a flash in a covered arena. Have you ever tried pointing the flash straight up and having it bounce off the ceiling or is the distance too far for the light to travel? So far, the results of shooting without a flash in the covered arena haven't been good at all. Thanks for posting this information.
